Attractions
Rosslyn, VA is located just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC and is close to several area attractions. The following list is just a few spots of interest. You may find others on your own and there are many, many more outside of the Rosslyn but yet in the DC Metro area.
Freedom Park - Located just outside River Place on North Lynn Street. Freedom Park the Freedom Forum Journalists Memorial with the names of reporters and photographers who lost their lives while covering news. A toppled, headless Lenin statue, purchased from the St. Petersburg Branch of the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation can also be found in the park along with a section of the Berlin Wall.
The Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima) - The Marine Corps War Memorial stands as a symbol of this grateful Nation's esteem for the honored dead of the U.S. Marine Corps. While the statue depicts one of the most famous incidents of World War II, the memorial is dedicated to all Marines who have given their lives in the defense of the United States since 1775. The statue, with its 60-foot-tall bronze flagpole, stands 78 feet tall. It is the largest cast bronze statue in the world. The statue is located on the other side of Arlington Blvd. (Hwy 50) from River Place Apartments.
The Netherlands Carillon - This bell tower symbolizes the friendship between the people of the Netherlands and those of the United States. Officially dedicated on May 5, 1960, the fifteenth anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands from the Nazis. It's a 49-bell tower presented by the Dutch as a tribute to the United States for aid during World War II. The largest bell has a diameter of nearly 7 feet and weighs 12,654 pounds. Carillon concerts can be heard on Saturdays and national holidays during summer months. It is positioned between the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima) and Arlington national Cemetery.
Arlington National Cemetery - This cemetery is widely regarded as the nation's most hallowed grounds. The 200 acre cemetery currently holds over 260,000 military men and women laid to rest. On average, almost 100 funerals take place here each week. Interesting sites of the cemetery includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, astronauts from Space Shuttle Challenger, Presidents William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy, and Robert E. Lee's house.

Rosslyn Spectrum - A vibrant performing arts venue offering live theatre and music in the evenings and on most weekends. Located across Wilson Blvd. from the back entrance to River Place Apts. at 1611 N. Kent St., 703-228-1850.
Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Island - Theodore Roosevelt Island -- A 91-acre wooded island with hiking trails dedicated to the 26th President, whose greatest legacy was in conservation. A memorial features many of his thought-provoking quotes as well as a statute of the great outdoorsman, naturalist and visionary.
The Deep Throat Garage - 1820 North Nash St - Column 32 D. The now famous garage where "Deep Throat" met with Woodward and Bernstein during the early 70's that exposed the Watergate Scandal.
Fort Myer - - Fort Myer -- Home of the oldest military division in the US, the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment. Visit the Old Guard Museum and the grave site of Black Jack -- the rider-less horse that marched in more than 150 funerals, including those of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. |
