~ Dean's Requirements ~

While attending the Lutheran College Washington Semester, students are required to complete the Dean's Requirements.  These consist of a Congressional Committee Summary, a Protest or Demonstration Paper, and completing 12 hours of community service.

Attendance

Students are required to attend and participate in all field trips, meetings with experts, discussions, and other designated programs.  Students should be certain of times, dates, locations, and proper attire of each event.  Be advised that changes may occur at the last minute because of the nature of Washington politics.  Always use the latest information provided.  For any absence, students must write a 3-page paper analyzing the topic missed, including the current issues, ethical questions, and proposals for changes in the current public policy.  The paper must be turned in to Dr. Nancy Joyner no later than one week from the date of the missed field trip or activity.

On-Campus Reader and Grading Standards

Each student must have an on-campus reader for the purpose of receiving a grade for internship credit.  Students are graded on standards approved by their home campus and indicated in their respective college catalogue.  The on-campus reader will receive the evaluation from your internship.  Student's grades for academic coursework will be forwarded to your school registrar upon satisfactory completion of all Dean's requirements and payment of ALL debt to the Lutheran College Washington Semester.

Congressional Committee Summary

Students must attend a House or Senate committee or subcommittee meeting/hearing and write a two to three page summary/analysis of the meeting/hearing.

Protest / Demonstration Paper

Students are required to participate in or observe a live protest or demonstration and write a three-page paper analyzing the experience.

Community Service

A minimum of 12 hours of community service is required during the semester in Washington, DC.  Each student must prepare a brief summary of his/her community service hours.  The LCWS staff reserves the right to decide what constitutes community service.  If a student is unsure if an event or activity qualifies as community service, he/she should verify it with the LCWS staff.
