Internships

Dean Nancy D. Joyner Scholarship Fund

Undergraduate students are eager to intern with nonprofit organizations whose missions they are passionate about. Yet many nonprofits are unable to pay their interns, and many students cannot afford to take unpaid internships. Named for LCWS's first Dean, this fund provides stipends to students who want to intern with a nonprofit organization, but need a stipend to be able to take the internship. Scholarships are awarded at the the discretion of the LCWS staff, prioritizing students who need financial assistance. This is the primary scholarship fund for those making contributions to LCWS. The number of stipends granted each semester is determined by the funds available.

About Dean Joyner

Dr. Nancy D. Joyner began her tenure as Dean and Executive Director of the Lutheran College Washington Semester (LCWS) in 1991.  Over the course of 27 years, Dr. Joyner helped LCWS grow from a one semester program conducted by a faculty member on sabbatical from one of the participating colleges to a robust and self-sufficient program operating during the fall and spring semesters along with a residential internship program in the summers. Dr. Joyner is a native of New Orleans, LA.  She earned her doctorate from Florida State University and completed post-doctoral studies at the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Joyner previously served as Dean of Continuing Education at Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania.  She is a former state president of the Virginia American Association of University Women (AAUW) and a national vice president of AAUW.

"The Joyner scholarship allows students to get all of the benefits of an educational internship without having to experience the hardships of living with no income in an expensive city."

Additional Opportunities to Give

Legacy Gifts

Did you know that there is a way to support LCWS while meeting your own financial and charitable goals? A legacy gift helps sustain the semester program and can provide you with tax, income, and other benefits. The most common way to support LCWS is through a named bequest in your will or beneficiary designation on your IRA account, but those are not the only ways to give. Let us help you explore the many advantageous ways to give and create a customized plan to make a lasting contribution to support LCWS.

If you have questions or would like more information about supporting LCWS through your estate, please contact our legacy giving partner, Christy Cole, at the Arlington Community Foundation at 703-243-4785 or ccole@arlcf.org.
